{"id":18178,"date":"2013-10-03T06:08:10","date_gmt":"2013-10-03T11:08:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/?p=18178"},"modified":"2013-10-08T10:30:47","modified_gmt":"2013-10-08T15:30:47","slug":"alfredo-carlo-amy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/the-bomb\/2013\/10\/03\/alfredo-carlo-amy\/","title":{"rendered":"~ALFREDO &#038; CARLO . . &#038; AMY \/ CHINATOWN"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>FOLLOW THE BREADCRUMBS &#8211; PART III<\/p>\n<p>so, apparently CARLO McCORMICK brought an adventurous, and way sharp Italian collector of &#8216;street&#8217; art (?) well, bleeding edge art is more like it &#8211; in this case . . to the opening of the small gallery, last Thursday &#8211;  where Alfredo was showing his work.<\/p>\n<p>and yep, this guy <strong>was<\/strong> smart. he bought all three Alfredo pieces .. for $1,250 each.<\/p>\n<p>snapped them up, right then and there. <\/p>\n<p>heard the afterparty dinner &#8211; was on Alfredo !!<br \/>\nthat&#8217;s how I knew &#8211; it was TRUE.<\/p>\n<p>never underestimate Alfredo, but esp  .. for turning up in the newest street-level hotspot, esp if there is a pretty Asian girl at the helm .. and we hear this one . .  is &#8220;no dummy&#8221;, either.<br \/>\nand. neither is Alfredo, bye the way.<\/p>\n<p>our newest downtown &#8216;it&#8217; gallerist is AMY LI &#8211; who just opened an exhibition space in a button shop at 166 MOTT ST in Chinatown, between Grand and Broome. it&#8217;s called . . 166 MOTT ALTERNATIVE ART SPACE, and it&#8217;s got a very lively <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pages\/166-MOTT-alternative-art-space\/640637899300351\">facebook . . page<\/a> <\/p>\n<p>in fact, I&#8217;m going to visit her tomorrow, Fri &#8211; so I&#8217;ll fill you in &#8211; first hand !!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/without-consent-card.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/without-consent-card.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"without-consent-card\" width=\"288\" height=\"432\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-18183\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/without-consent-card.jpg 288w, https:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/without-consent-card-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 288px) 100vw, 288px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nthe first show at 166 MOTT, &#8216;WITHOUT CONSENT&#8217; was curated by AMY LI, herself . .  and features works by:<br \/>\nBRIAN ERMANSKI, PIERRO CAMPIONE, EMIL MEMON, ALFREDO MARTINEZ, IARA CELESTE DIAZ, MIDORI OKUYAMA, and JOSE De OLIO.<br \/>\nthe show opened last Thurs Sept 26, 2013 and runs thru OCT 17, 2013 &#8211; so, yeah !!<br \/>\nyou can still catch a &#8216;moment&#8217; in art history &#8211; while it is truly nascent, and straight up from the street.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/without-consent-opening...jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/without-consent-opening...jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"without-consent-opening..\" width=\"720\" height=\"477\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-18185\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/without-consent-opening...jpg 720w, https:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/without-consent-opening..-300x198.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nthis photo is from the opening. it is posted on the gallery&#8217;s facebook page. <\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m a little reluctant to post it &#8211; as I don&#8217;t know all the people in the photo, and I don&#8217;t know who to give the photographer&#8217;s credit to ?<br \/>\nand that&#8217;s the curse of facebook, but jeez: another topic for another time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>but<\/strong> since I&#8217;m on the trail, and I&#8217;m gonna follow the bread crumbs right to the very last drop . . and find out !!<br \/>\n I&#8217;ll let you in on the trail, as it reveals itself.<\/p>\n<p>and, HAHA, SURPRISE !! . . or, rather NOT !!<br \/>\nthe trail leads right to . . who else ?<br \/>\n<strong>HESH !!<\/strong> aka HASH HALPER . . !!<br \/>\ndowntown&#8217;s underground mover and groover, supremo.<br \/>\nRed Rover, red rover, let HASH, come over !! it also looks to be large, although no dimensions are given &#8211; you can tell that, in part by the many different pieces of paper that form the background. <\/p>\n<p>yep the piece is on hand made paper, an Alfredo Martinez trademark. Alfredo quite often, laboriously puts together, glues together himself the paper he draws on &#8211; a trick he learned in prison. that was the only way he could get paper big enough, and key: durable enough &#8211; for him to draw on. it&#8217;s very papier mache strong. <\/p>\n<p>also: it makes sure you know you have the <strong>real<\/strong> deal, and not a &#8216;fake&#8217; Alfredo . .  ha. takes one to know one &#8211; and let&#8217;s . .  just leave it at that.<br \/>\nand also, Alfredo just really gets into . .  the hand building process. <\/p>\n<p>DIY gunmaker likes DIY paper. duh.<br \/>\nAlfredo should open an Etsy shop !! just jokin . .  seriously, guys !! <\/p>\n<p>makin&#8217; the paper, it kinda slows him down .. from the multiple schemes and ambitions that flicker in constant play in his brain.<br \/>\nand, well as a hobbist pastime . . sure beats makin&#8217; fakes.<\/p>\n<p>and in another way . . you know: art <strong>is<\/strong> a multi-layered thing.<\/p>\n<p>it&#8217;s also an homage to early American piecework quiltmaking. if you follow the breadcrumbs, <strong>back<\/strong> in time, the trail leads straight to an assistant he once had &#8211; who helped put together some of his earliest shows.<br \/>\nup from the street &#8211; that for sure.<br \/>\nand needing lots  . . of cheap &#8211; and BIG, durable drawing surfaces.<\/p>\n<p>Quiet, Guns and Quilts. some things just ..
