The film won the Palme d&#8217;Or for Best Film<br \/>\nat the Cannes Film Festival.<\/p>\n<p>Jonathan Lethem published his first novel, <em>Gun with Occasional Music<\/em>, in 1994.<br \/>\nHe first garnered major critical and audience attention with <em>Motherless Brooklyn<\/em> (1999),<br \/>\na tale of a private detective with Tourette syndrome, which won the National  Book<br \/>\nCritics Circle Award.  Among his recent works  are <em>The Fortress of Solitude<\/em><br \/>\n(2003), a semi-autobiographical novel set in late-970&#8217;s Brooklyn, and a collection of<br \/>\nessays, <em>The Disappointment Artist<\/em> (2005).  In 2005, Lethem was named<br \/>\nrecipient of a MacArthur Fellowship grant. He lives in Brooklyn.<\/p>\n<p>Jerry Schatzberg was an established professional photographer, with work published in<br \/>\n<em>Vogue<\/em> and <em>McCalls<\/em>, before he turned to filmmaking.  Among<br \/>\nhis credits as a director are <em>The Panic in Needle Park<br \/>\n<\/em> (1971), <em>The Seduction of Joe Tynan<\/em> (1979) and <em>Street Smart<\/em><br \/>\n(1987).<\/p>\n<p>In the Movie Nights Program, the IFC Center turns over a theater to special guests<br \/>\nand lets <em>them<\/em> call the shots. Audiences can discover what some of their<br \/>\nfavorite authors, musicians, artists and filmmakers would pick if it were Movie Night<br \/>\nat their house. Participants appear in person to share why they made their selections:<br \/>\nto acknowledge the brilliance of a timeless classic, spotlight an unsung gem, or defend<br \/>\na guilty pleasure.
