{"id":129,"date":"2006-07-28T12:28:50","date_gmt":"2006-07-28T17:28:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/the-bomb\/2006\/07\/28\/target-first-saturdaysphotos-by-kate-cerigo\/"},"modified":"2006-08-03T21:23:08","modified_gmt":"2006-08-04T02:23:08","slug":"target-first-saturdaysphotos-by-kate-cerigo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artloversnewyork.com\/zine\/the-bomb\/2006\/07\/28\/target-first-saturdaysphotos-by-kate-cerigo\/","title":{"rendered":"~Target First Saturdays\/Photos by KATE CERIGO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>KATE CERIGO, a 3rd year Graphic Design student at SVA (School of Visual Arts, NYC)<br \/>\nwent with a whole group of friends from the Lower East Side &#8211; to the recent &#8211; JULY  1st &#8211;<br \/>\nTarget First Saturday event at the BROOKLYN MUSEUM.<br \/>\nThere&#8217;s free !! music, movies and special events, including a dance party !<br \/>\nplus access to exhibits &#8211; sponsored by Target &#8211; on the First Saturday of<br \/>\neach month, from 5-11pm.<\/p>\n<p>Kate reports that the recent July 1st Saturday evening event was a great<br \/>\nparty &#8211; and everyone had a really great time.  They spent alot of time<br \/>\nin the &#8216;Graffiti&#8217; exhibit &#8211; which they all really enjoyed &#8211; even though<br \/>\nthe group of friends had very diverse backgrounds, and  Kate was probably<br \/>\nthe only serious &#8216;art&#8217; student among them. Several films were shown including<br \/>\n<em>Style Wars<\/em>, the acclaimed documentary about New York City<br \/>\ngraffiti writers, and <em>Wild Style<\/em>, featuring Lee Quinones<br \/>\nand Lady Pink. It appears to have a focus on<br \/>\nimmigration,  and the dynamic &#038; lively cultural diversity it brings to New York City.<\/p>\n<p>Among the <em>many<\/em> events offered:<\/p>\n<p>Ivor L. Miller, author of &#8216;Aerosol Kingdom: Subway Painters of New York City&#8217;,<br \/>\nwill lead a  tour of the &#8216;Graffiti&#8217; exhibit &#8211; with a  focus on &#8220;how immigration<br \/>\nhelped make aerosol art possible&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>there will be 2 film screenings &#8211; and these look really interesting:<\/p>\n<p>at 5pm &#8211; <em>MY AMERICAN GIRLS: A DOMINICAN STORY<\/em><br \/>\n(Aaron Matthews, 2002) documents a year in the life of an immigrant<br \/>\nfamily from the Dominican Republic, now living in Brooklyn.<\/p>\n<p>at 6:30pm &#8211; <em>SUGAR CANE ALLEY<\/em>, (Euzhan Palcy, 1983) tells the story<br \/>\nof a woman who tries to keep her grandson from a life of work in the<br \/>\nsugar cane fields in 1930&#8217;s Martinique.<\/p>\n<p>THE DANCE PARTY, from 8:30 -11pm will feature  DJ Reborn and Mary Mac<br \/>\nspinning music that &#8216;spans&#8217; the Caribbean.<\/p>\n<p>check out the museum website below for details.<\/p>\n<p>note: although <em>all<\/em> the events are free &#8211; some of the events &#8211;  due to<br \/>\nlimited seating capacity &#8211; e.g. some of  the film screenings &#8211;<br \/>\nrequire (free) seating tickets available in the lobby &#8211; usually about 1 hour prior<br \/>\nto the schelduled start time.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.brooklynmuseum.org\">brooklynmuseum.org<\/a>  <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>KATE CERIGO, a 3rd year Graphic Design student at SVA (School of Visual Arts, NYC) went with a whole group of friends from the Lower East Side &#8211; to the recent &#8211; JULY 1st &#8211; Target First Saturday event at the BROOKLYN MUSEUM.
