~’HOMESTEAD’ . . BARBARA FEINMAN GALLERY, S.F. / feat: BOBBY VITERI, CHASE HALL, ISAAC BREST, TUCKER VANDER WYDEN, LUKE TODD, JARED BUSCHANG / OPENS FRI

it’s an exceptionally interesting time in the art world. it feels like a page is being turned.
the mainstream art world is shrinking in clout, and rapidly dropping off.
the underground is becoming unwieldly, but within that large mass of impossible dreams, and infinite hopes . . .
a small pool of supremely focused talent – is breaking out.
I really like how the range of expression – is so extreme. intellectually & visually compelling.
you can find heart-breakingly ‘minimal’. . . walking on the conceptual knife’s edge,
to the passionate scientist . . .
to the all-out, far-out ‘expressionist’ wacky.
FROM HAIKU to . . PBS NOVA, to . . SURREALIST GERMAN ROMANTIC !!
that’s some . . pretty tasty, monster sushi roll.

this show, this gallery and the artists it presents . . comes under: heart-breakingly ‘minimal’.
cool, as in knock-dead mentally metallic / graphic. resourceful. one-of-a-kind.
hidden, but in-your-face. cold-hearted.
riding storms that go right over your head, in their ‘sleekness’, and sly nature.
but always, always . . coming right down – on the point-like ‘mark’.
Aztec calendar – is what comes to mind.

~HENRY CHAPMAN . . writes up BLINN & LAMBERT / MICROSCOPE, LAST WEEKEND – thru JAN 14

HENRY CHAPMAN wrote . . .
a wonderful, short & to-the-point essay . . both elegant & scientific !!
on the BLINN & LAMBERT, ‘New Grey Planet’ show, still up at Microscope, Brooklyn – thru this weekend.

I especially liked how ‘informed’ his take was, and how he was able to visualize & ‘pull out’ so many different, yet specific elements. I was also . . absolutely stunned by his last sentence, & the essay’s conclusion:
“Expressivity isn’t a given – it’s a project.” (!!!!)

which mirrored my own conclusion – that above all else, ‘New Grey Planet’ is a . . trip.
a 3-D immersive production, that’s made to be seen / & experienced – so go see it while you can.

everyone comes out – with their own version, their own sense of what they had just . . stepped into. a dark room, a blast of red & blue light.
an open format, unspecified sci fi narrative, and the mysterious life . . of ordinary objects.
there is no blatant human presence.

“like PONGE before them, the artists (BLINN & LAMBERT / NICHOLAS STEINDORF & KYLE WILLIAMS) . . find life in these everyday things through twin acts of observation & imagination.”
~HENRY CHAPMAN.

for the record:
it was super great of MICROSCOPE, to live up to its name & mission . . and bring these young artists’ visionary & ground-breaking debut show to Brooklyn / NYC.

HD single-channel stereoscopic 3D video, silent. 4 minutes 4 seconds
ed. of 3 + 2 APs

HENRY CHAPMAN’s essay on ‘NEW GREY PLANET’ . . for ‘artcritical’ begins:
“Milk glass floats under a pendulum of light .. it’s effect both vivid and spectral enough to recall FRANCIS PONGE’S assessment of the mollusk , ‘a being – almost – a quality.’
that phrase making a good ‘5 word’ . . summation of the entire show, in all its permutations, itself.

frame from . . ‘Doe, a Deer’.

HENRY CHAPMAN: “Every object has a shadow teeming with associative resonances. In one of the most strangely poetic moments … the shadow of a porcelain deer figurine is partially absorbed and erased by a stream of time-released water.”

HENRY CHAPMAN: “Expressivity isn’t a given – it’s a project.”

~HEATHER BENJAMIN . . ART IN AD PLACES

@artinadplaces: #AdTakeover 52 of 52: ‘Jealous Lover 1’ by @heatherbenjamin_
HEATHER BENJAMIN says, “I think it’s easy to experience a sort of tunnel vision when you’re running around in the city, it can be a kind of natural response to all the over-stimulation. But that can cause you to miss things going on around you that could be fresh opportunities for critical thinking or raw emotional reactions . . . .”

‘DEATH OF A TAIL’ – NEW WORK BY HEATHER BENJAMIN

~HEATHER BENJAMIN . . ‘DEATH OF A TAIL’ / DRESS SHOP / OPENING NIGHT PIX !!

‘DEATH OF a TAIL’ – NEW WORK BY HEATHER BENJAMIN
OPENED DEC 15, 2017
the show runs thru JAN 12, 2018

more info: DRESS SHOP GALLERY / ‘DEATH OF A TAIL’ – HEATHER BENJAMIN

some brief notes from the gallery website, link above for full essay:

‘DEATH OF A TAIL’ . . .
marks a departure for BENJAMIN. Having spent years with her practice firmly rooted in DIY zine & comics culture, her drawings have typically been made with the intent of mass reproduction, through photocopying & screen printing. With this body of work, Benjamin moves in a new direction, creating works whose primary motivations are not exclusively to be reproduced & reprinted as their final form, but are instead made to be viewed as singular & precious objects . . .
The works range from the most minuscule of talismans to larger than life representations of the female creatures that, until now, have lived only in the pages of her books . . .

HEATHER BENJAMIN . . . b.1989 Tarrytown New York / lives & works in Providence, RI / Rhode Island.
She graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2016 with a BFA in Printmaking.

PIX – FROM THE OPENING – ‘DEATH OF A TAIL’ – NEW WORK BY HEATHER BENJAMIN:

HEATHER BENJAMIN . . at the opening party, FRI DEC 15, 2017
big crowd at DRESS SHOP, to-nite !!

I overheard some (other) guys !! . . .
saying the explicit ‘female’ imagery was shocking . . !!
I hadn’t even noticed !! in the bigger picture !!

so I’ll take a closer look . . . digital !!
I think it’s pretty elegant .. calligraphic, and well, definite not . . intersex !!
or, is there some sense of that, intersex ?
it was definite not ‘porn’, here. it was just pretty much descriptive / decorative.
art as ‘bio’ – in the classic sense. Asian art history-inspired. poetic.
definite . . ‘not’ scummy. not ‘bondage’ etc. etc.
though, if you look through her body of work – you begin to see a ‘spectrum’.

actually, I think the ‘bold’ way in which the ‘hands’ are drawn, and how expressive they are . . and how classic Chinese / Japanese (?) art history alluding they are,
is . . more interesting, plastic / composition, draftsmanship, technique – wise !!

ps: her color palette is so right on the mark, right now.
esp in fashion, all those cutting edge, new age crafty / embellished ‘quilt’ coats & ‘patch’ sweaters are all afalling all over themselves – with that . . muted pink salmon color.
prob because it’s a shade . . that works well in the ‘neon’ range of widely, commercially available synthetic yarns.
& drawing inks, too.
