~MORE ANTIQUE NEEDLECRAFT FINDS !!

here’s a few pieces from my own, mostly thrift shop find – needlecraft collection !!

nancy needle # 1
hand blown glass pin cushion. ca. 1960 ? maybe earlier. don’t know.
paid $4.

nancy needle # 2
early Victorian pin cushion – late 1800s ?
paid $12.

nancy needle # 3
pumpkin pin cushion, early 1900s ? not sure.

nancy needle # 4
top: hand-carved DIY bone crochet hook. the manufactured hand-made ones, had fancy work at the handle’s other edge.
early 1880s ? it has a really nice ‘used’ feel to it. I like to think a sailor made it from whalebone – but I’m not sure.
some were actually made from cow bone.
bottom: 2 porcupine quills. from a nature store that was in SOHO, back in the day, the 1990’s – selling (illegal) black market animal skeletons, alligator heads, and shells, etc. now closed.
Native American Indians used these to decorate their clothes made from animal, mostly deer deer hides, before they were able to trade for European beads. they would dye the quills with (permanent) natural vegetable dyes, colors like red or black. then put the quills between their teeth and flatten them, making sure to retain the sharp points. and then ‘thread’ them through the softened animal hides.
1900’s.

nancy needle # 5
sharp points – man-made and found in nature.

nancy needle # 6
felt embroidery ‘farm’ scene. ca. Woodstock days – late 1960s.
child’s sleeve cuff.

nancy needle # 7
mother of pearl buttons. yep back in the day – way back – buttons were made from shells.
back in the day of the Lower East Side, pre 2000 – you could find all these old creaky old sewing goods emporiums all along lower Broadway south of Houston. usually run by ancient old Jewish men in yarmulkas, they were fantastic treasure troves of vintage needle goods. esp buttons and ribbons. the stock had not been updated for at least 100 years, even 200.
not joking.
when the buildings became more valuable – than the goods – (for a long time they were worth zip), they were sold, and now you can find OLD NAVY and STARBUCKS instead.

nancy needle # 8
the old yiddisha men used to pull the mother of pearl buttons out in small sacks – like they were gold.
some were very raw.

nancy needle # 9
some were very finished.
. . . all could take you back – to – HOME ON THE PRAIRIE – days. at the very least. some of the stuff even went back to Colonial times.

~JERSEY CITY ARTISTS STUDIO TOUR

. . . last weekend we took our camera over to JERSEY CITY – for the JERSEY CITY ARTISTS STUDIO TOUR, OCT 3 & 4, 2009.
we started off in JERSEY CITY HEIGHTS at the PERSHING FIELD COMMUNITY CENTER, for a show of local artists curated by DIANE FLEMING. then we went downtown to the NEW PORT MALL, for a show curated by ERIC SOPHIE aka LEGOMASTER.

bye the way, the young denizens of NEW YORK CITY – call JERSEY CITY – the land of “the chill” – don’t ask me why . . . I’m really not quite sure what they mean by that – as J.C. is pretty rough & tumble – though sometimes the PATH TRAIN does look like the L train ride to Williamsburg – looked to be circa 1996 !!

JC Tour # 1
FLUVIO GIUDICI. PERSHING FIELD ARTIST GROUP.

Jc Tour # 2
FLUVIO GIUDICI . . . Mr. Giudici was born in 1927 in Pirano ITALY, a small town on the Adriatic Coast.
he says: “I went to school for 8 years before going to work in the town boat yard. My job at the ship yard was marine carpenter. I came to America in 1959 and went to work on the water front securing cargo on ships. In 1972 the industry was modernized with containerization and I found myself with a guaranteed salary and a lot of time on my hands. I started painting and drawing to occupy my time, this is my hobby and I am a self-taught artist”.
He told me started painting when his kids left unfinished a ‘paint by numbers’ set in the 1970’s – he didn’t complete the given picture, he just took up the brushes and the left-over paints and started his own painting.

JC Tour # 3
JACK COLEMAN.
unknown by Jack he is wearing our favorite – very early American quilt, ‘star’ pattern: the ‘Ohio Star’, which dates back to the 1880’s. It’s the red 4 pointed star in the knit pattern of his sweater, on his sleeves at the elbow. A very famous pattern that goes back to medieval, maybe earlier roots, as a Christian or Catholic ‘cross’ pattern in Early European embroidery, knit, and crochet. As an American quilt block pattern – it has a great number of names and many variations, such as ‘Lone Star’ and ‘Texas Star’ – so the pattern in general – is often referred to as the ‘variable Star’. ‘Ohio Star’ was so popular, not only because it was so easy to make, but it also – because it was so dramatic. the early quilt makers of this country – also loved it because, each quilter could leave her own ‘mark’ – the basic design being so easily manipulated. So perhaps the early settler’s use of the ‘Ohio Star’s – richest legacy to American design – is that of – a basic patchwork pattern – which looks very different each time you see it, expressing each maker’s individual artistry – from quilt to quilt.

JC Tour # 4
our fav piece of Jack’s was this collage made from archival and souvenir scraps of early NYC pro baseball games. mementos that he said, were first collected by his brother.

‘TROIKA’, PETER ROSZKOWIAK.
Peter Roszkowaik was born in Poland and came to the U.S. in 1966, when he was 12. He was raised on the Lower East Side,
and lived in the West Village for 15 yrs, where he attended public school. a little later in life, after he had been married for 10 years, he began to get interested in art. “Walking through SOHO for so many years finally got to me. ” !!
He is self-taught and his first project was carving a MEERSCHAUM PIPE, which came in a do-it-yourself kit.
Then he began to carve wood, and recently he has taken up painting. this is only his second painting, ever.
He clearly remembers the rich folk art traditions of the country, he left behind at 12.

JC Tour - BOB M
when we returned later to PERSHING FIELD – we were able to catch BOB MIKSZA.

JC Tour # 50
marble carving by BOB MIKSZA.
BOB Miksza – 6 years ago he enrolled in a course on marble and stone carving at SVA – the SCHOOL Of VISUAL ARTS, NYC. Lori Ellison, who wrote Bob’s short bio in the small book accompanying the show, tell us: “Since then, Bob has been making sculptures. He modestly calls it a hobby, but it is a passionate one. His work is largely intuitive as he had no training previous to enrolling in that one class. His work reflects his interest in Shamanism and tribal belief systems”.
with all due respect – we noticed the tattoo on his left forearm, which refers to his service as a marine ranger in the Korean war – so we’re thinking his tour of action, as a young man – in the Far East, also had some influence on his art, too.

~yo, BRO !!

ERic sall & BROMIRSKI
above: artist ERIC SAL & on the right – artist/blogger MARTIN BROMIRSKI of ANABA !!
thank god – it ain’t about skunk city models – so guess those google goons won’t be aknockin’ on your door. this halloween, or will they ? who are we to ruin a good thing, bro !!
PHOTOGRAPHED: at the TOMOO GOKITA OPENING – ‘CHAMPION CARNIVAL’ – ATM – MARCH 13, 2009
PHOTO: NANCY SMITH
see: TOMOO GOKITA/CHAMPION CARNIVAL/OPENING PIX !!

FROM THE HOME PAGE:
FRI OCT 9: . . . yo, BRO, as in BROMIRSKI !! – paws off our secret weapon – hard-partying artlovers man-about-town & big mouth mouthpiece – SIMON CERIGO !!
. . . we hear CERIGO regaled you with stories of the good old days when the Lower East Side – really was the Lower East Side and the art legends rolled, I mean ruled – mighty. ask him to tell ya bout BASQUIAT’S fridge – only pot. pounds of it. too bad he didn’t stick around long enough – to do an MTV – WELCOME TO MY CRIB – spot !!. anyways, CERIGO apparently even touched down with some gleeful reminiscences re: the newly shuttered almost, that’s a-l-m-o-s-t most hated man-about-town – faux dealer to the max – MICHAEL STEINBERG !!
apparently, BROMIRSKI esp loved the bit – where Simon told him that back in the day he and Charlie, as in FINCH !! – artnet secret weapon and grand daddy mentor to all us cutting edge snarks, sharks, whatever !! – used to chuckle that STEINBERG was more interesting for the $400 shirts he wore on his back – than the art on his walls !!

so, OK. heads up – ANABA BRAT – if you really want some dirt – next time – ask SIMON what he and DAVID LETTERMAN have in common ?
hint: it got NANCY thrown out of ‘QUIET’ & left one unnamed no-talent trust fund baby – who was solely known for running around with a huge baggy of free flowing weed, Simon’s fav artworld species – knocked-out cold on the floor with one blow & in the Josh Harris bio ‘WE LIVE IN PUBLIC’ you can see the Nancy imprinted nail marks on her throat up-close – which she had to have plastic surgeoned away. with daddy’s $$. like I said – if you don’t like the heat – stay outta the kitchen !! still not warm ?
the NEW YORK POST got it right today:
“And the No. 1 reason DAVID LETTERMAN is a cad: The ‘LATE SHOW’ host brought his assistant he was sleeping with on Caribbean vacations with his wife and their young son.”
except in Simon’s case – it was his quote unquote “employer gallerist”.

so, you might rightfully ask: why we keep Simon on, at least as a spinmeister – well, he has a few redeeming characteristics. name one ? OMG get this – he shows up at ZIEHER SMITH openings, who we just rated as D.O.A. – DEAD ON ARRIVAL – skanky drug dealer pals in tow – piles on the free beer .. and tells SCOTT: “I’m best friends with CHARLIE FINCH” – which gets him behind the front desk to hear all about Scott’s half million buck renovation – and then – he goes in for the sucker punch – “… but I’m also artlover’s hubby !!”.
at that, Zieher pointed to the extra unopened beer can Simon had stashed in his shirt pocket and told Cerigo – he “was greedy!!” – to which Simon replies, “whadya mean, I’m gonna drink it”??!!

. . . ya, just can’t make this stuff up. at least someone, can laugh in this godforsaken sinkhole of an art scene . . .
regarding Scott and his art world ambitions – funny, how you can have just about everything – and there’s still gonna be that thorn – that street-wise smart-ass – that’s gonna take you down, and ruin your half million $$ party to boot !!
. . . and, truth be told – it is the dirt poor stoner bad boys, and girls !! – who really make & break this town. take a note, ALBERTO !! or, as we like to call him around the office – DJAM !! anyways – Simon’s conclusion to the night’s revelry ? “nobody was there, I mean there were a lot of slackers, but nobody really important”. and the show ? “sort of trendy. some guy. you could see where Zieher Smith was going, but what was his wife wearing ? some purple shirt and these weird boots . . .?” no wonder he’s on our payroll. . .
at least the goggle goonies can’t get me – my name is already at the top of this page. and skank city has-been models aside, not to mention celebrity socialite voice mail hackers – the straighter I am going to lay it down. talk about a rose and a thorn. talk about a stoner Greek and a wise cracking Jew. ruling the scene – and singing a song – all the way down – to landlord tenant eviction court . . ah, the life of the rich and the poor. NYC style 2009.

. . . hey, they were even threatening to take away my internet juice – for lack of 40 bucks !! can you grow it at home, you know, homegrown DIY hi-speed ? somebody tell – Jeffrey D. – those are the kind of ‘Sunday School’ classes – we really want.
