MAD VICKY’S TEA GALLERY – is proud to present – ‘This Place is Foreign’ – a group exhibition of artists based in BERLIN, but from elsewhere. Working with music, video, sculpture, textiles, drawings, photography, and painting, these artists met serendipitously in Berlin and have found ways to use the city as a background for collaboration – artistic and recreational – in studios, galleries, bars, and discotheques. A performance by HANAYO – on OCT 1st – at 19:00 – accompanies the show.

“The condition of international artists in Berlin is more science-fiction than political drama: The works exhibited in the show recall psychedelic, perverse, mysterious, and happy visits to unexplored regions rather than hankerings for national identities or exotic fetishes. Selecting a context for the works of art becomes situational, playful, and participatory, perhaps like their creation.
Through the artists’ uses of various media, the show looks at the moment when distinctions collapse between work and play, personal and collective, the familiar and the foreign.”

‘OUTSIDERS NY’ – 282 BOWERY – just off HOUSTON
the BRIT-based LAZARIDES GALLERY – STREET ART – NYC POP-UP SHOW
2 WEEKS ONLY !! SEPT 26 – OCT 12, 2008 !!
HRS: OPEN DAILY 11am – 7pm
first off, the gallery isn’t based in London, per se – it’s in NEWCASTLE. second, not all the artists are Brits either, BAST seems to be based in BROOKLYN, JR is from France, and CONOR HARRINGTON hails from CORK, IRELAND. MARK JENKINS is a native of WASHINGTON, DC and TODD JAMES aka REAS is a BROOKLYN native who lives and works in NYC.
one of the best aspects of the installation is its lighting quick rough and ready, get in there & get out – conversion of a BOWERY trademark – RESTAURANT/KITCHEN/CHAIR SUPPLY STORE – to a guerilla exhibition space – that harks back – to the good ole days – of the wild ROGUE pop-up shows of the 80’s, before the term ‘POP-up’ existed !! They did a damn good job – of leaving the space really raw and yet: functioning as a great showcase for their brand of art. The Lazarides take on street art seems to be heavily leaning on the dark side – and the genre’s statesmen; nothing wrong with that, just an observation, (and there are several contradictions to this statement in the show, i.e. the pop graphics of TODD JAMES & the youthful visions of CONOR HARRINGTON !!) as opposed to, say the current, and slightly more ahead-of-the-curve = pop graphic street art show show: ‘4 GEEZERS: LONDON POLICE, FLYING FORTRESS, PEZ & EINE’ – curated by ANDREW MICHAEL FORD at BROOKLYN’S own AD HOC GALLERY.

JOE BRADLEY’S CHEESEBURGER was a no-show. but KEMBRA PFAHLER’S band: THE VOLUPTUOUS HORROR OF KAREN BLACK – did show, strut butt naked & PLAY !! pretty good music … in fact theywere more than pretty good – they were pretty d-r-i-v-i-n-g. Amazon tall in-your-face skinny chicks, with huge hair, (which at some point various members of the band – including Kembra – tore off in big chunks and threw to the audience) – and one KABUKI-like chubby white one – 100% naked under a skin dusting coat of shocking pink body powder ? paint ? they didn’t have their usual ‘shocking’ vagina/sex ‘props’ with them – caught in transit on the way to some museum, Boston ? – for an upcoming show – which might have been just as well to my mind – though they make for great pix in the book !! – thought they were pretty interested as is – stripped down and just playing their music – instead of playing their props. SPECIAL GUEST, ARMEN RA from LA on the THERAMIN – was very goth. then TV BABY !! – did a sweet, as in super driving short set. DAN COLEN was a no-show, but DASH SNOW ambled in at some point – just in time to catch TV BABY. His book – ‘NEST’ – for his SECRET SNOW BABY !! – is big, beautiful, tough and raw !! – a very top drawer art book – that’s gonna be on everybody’s coffee table, no doubt about it.

It’s her !! postcard – in the latest session of ‘Harlem Postcards: Summer 2008 ‘ – part of an ongoing project at THE STUDIO MUSEUM in HARLEM, which invites “contemporary artists of diverse backgrounds to reflect on Harlem as a site for artistic contemplation and production. . .
Installed in the museum lobby and available to visitors, ‘Harlem Postcards’ presents intimate views and fresh perspectives on this famous neighborhood”. This season features images by ALANI BOSS, MIGUEL CALDERON, CAT CHOW and FELICIA MEGGINSON.

yep, it has finally been confirmed – it’s a done deal – after keeping insiders on the edge of their seats – for the last 6 months !! the ink has finally been laid to paper.
ATM GALLERY will be moving to the former OLIVER KAMM Gallery space on 27th St, and FOXY PRODUCTION will be moving to the former CLEMENTINE Gallery space, also on 27th St – just west of 10th AVE in CHELSEA. With the move, both galleries each easily doubling – their current exhibition space.
this game of musical chairs – now leaves the soon-to-be former FOXY space up for grabs. ATM’s old space – will be re-absorbed by its original/primary leasee, WALLSPACE.
Both spaces will hold inaugural openings on FRIDAY, OCT 17th. FOXY PRODUCTION will present new work by JIMMY BAKER. ATM GALLERY will be presenting a selection of major new works by gallery artists – including a much anticipated large piece by HUMA BHABHA.
on the right, BILL BRADY of ATM GALLERY with NOAM RAPPAPORT, at the recent opening of ‘NOAM RAPPAPORT’ – his debut one man show at ATM GALLERY, SEPT 5, 2008.
The show runs SEPT 5 – OCTOBER 11, 2008.

At the time – they were both living (independently), and working in this multi-artist communal space, run by MELISSA BROWN.
