there will be a CLOSING PARTY – on THURS, MAY 7th / 6 – 8 PM

GOOGLE SEARCH – DEFINE: SLAB . . . in ceramics:

from Pat’s . . Mission / Exhibition Statement:

“Like all printed matter, zines have a physical life span. Even when shelved by the most caring reader, they naturally decay and die. This fragility gives them their voodoo, their authority to communicate in very intimate and immediate terms, full of emotion.

The entirety of the works featured in ‘Slabs’ are literary constructs. Hand built dub versions of mass-distributed photocopied ephemera – of excerpted pages from the zines Born To Kill, and Skirts, flyers, tattoo flashes, pin-ups – recontextualized as heirloom objects in slab form. That is, presented not on paper but on ‘hard rectangular surfaces’ of varied and opposing materials and mediums. The pieces in ‘Slabs’ are realized using universal technologies and very elemental materials – porcelain, cotton, steel, film photography, flesh. These works are created primarily on either white ceramic porcelain or black denim, maintaining the monochromatic visual aesthetics of the zine pages from which they are dubbed.

Approximately 20 pieces will be presented … ranging from 8.5 in x 11 in to 17 in x 23 in. They are hung across 2 walls, in a classic clusterfuck salon style. But this is not a crowded ‘survey’ of recent work. This is a temporal sculpture of a single book, Written on the wall on the occasion of this exhibit.

The Porcelain Slabs are created by transferring a photocopy, using iron-rich toner, directly onto wet porcelain slabs. When kiln-fired, the black carbon burns away and the sepia-colored iron burns into the ceramic body, embedded permanently. Porcelain is an ancient technology, a material that retains its composites for thousands of years. Selecting zine pages to elevate as Hall-of-Famers, to canonize on stone, takes much consideration, as these slabs will outlive me 10-fold. Yet all it takes for this eternal marriage is the photocopier and the application of fire.

Black denim and bleach are two materials that I keep in abundance on the roof for tending the pigeons and the coops. The ‘paintings’ I create with them are a sort of photographic negative of both the paper and ceramic zines. It is the opposite craft of ritualized ‘edit and revision’. Here the first draft is eternal. Every gesture, every move, mark, and mistake, is exposed. Like a tattoo onto skin, all is a one-liner. And like flesh, these paintings will deteriorate. Wood and denim will warp and ultimately rot. Similarly, painting with bleach begets a personal consideration of mortality, the fumes stinging my lungs each time the brush is dipped.

In my zines there’s constant emphasis on place – place in very direct terms – an acknowledgement of what is under one’s feet at all moments; either it’s the street (Cheesebike), or the sky (Pigeoning), or the sea, or in bed (Skirts). When you’re hyper-focused on that, on your feet and on the slabs beneath your feet, everywhere becomes an experiment, a sculptural stage, or a poem.”

~ED HOPPER . . NEW WHITNEY

EDWARD HOPPER . . . vs VAN GOGH ?
it’s a – tie !!
just, one’s American, and the other . . Dutch.

finally – !!
caught a great photo in the mainstream media of the new Whitney building – today !!
it’s by BILLY FARRELL, I’ve always liked his work.
you get a great sense of the water, the sky, that this an ISLAND. and the playful genius of the building, itself.

PHOTO BY BILLY FARRELL / WALL STREET JOURNAL, Mon April 27, 2015

and, as well over the weekend, the NEW YORK POST chimed with the first really compelling – art (and eats !!) coverage. it’s the first time I actually felt interested in the agenda over there. I mean its pretty fast and heavy . . on the underground beat – talk about . . gritty !!

I mean, if you forget about hoping that this museum, and it’s current set of curators, who are more like librarians, than anything else . . sorry but it’s true, could actually do a giant intellectual leap or even stretch . . and put up some really cutting edge art, on that innovative infrastructure, their ‘classic’ holdings are . . beyond inspiring.

forget that Mary Heilmann stuff . . sorry, but she’s taking up space that should go to others that got swept under the rug, by her questionable rise. I never understood that acclaim for her work, for the life of me. was that Roberta’s handiwork ?
maybe it’s because I studied under that great color field painter GUIDO MOLINARI back in Montreal ? probably so. once you taste hardcore, once you eat sushi – it’s hard to eat . . canned tuna.

though that cascading stairway of bare electric light bulbs by FELIX GONZALEZ-TORRES, 1994-95, (scroll down the link for the article, below – for a great installation photo !!) is wow. industrial hardcore gritty chic – or what !!

but EDWARD HOPPER ? to see those beauts, of light, and the American angst, the heartbeat of the American landscape, before everything went totally haywire – wow, now that’s what I call . . divine opportunity. (scroll down that same link to see . . his classic ‘Early Sunday Morning’) show me a Hopper line drawing, a preliminary working sketch, a watercolor. they should do a huge, totally immersive throw-down in the spirit of that Cattelan Guggenheim retrospective, yeah, that’s what I’m talking about !!

also, there is truly something rather great and mysterious to that ROBERT HENRI portrait of GERTRUDE WHITNEY, the museum’s founder, who scandalized the social scene with her love of pajama’s – before Julian did – !!
talk about a light source, I’d like to see that – up close and personal.
damn digital images, anyway.
gotta love that Gertrude Whitney – indie spirit !! . . “a sculptor and savvy collector, she once offered 700 pieces to the MET, which basically said, ‘No thanks’ (!!)
. . so in 1931 she started a museum of her own.” (!!)
no wonder her spirit – lives on.

it’s also a great and generous idea to have a small exhibition room, and an eatery open to the public – without needing to sign up and pay a $20 admission fee, every time you want to hop over – from the High Line.

so, here’s my no-brainer of a prediction:
their ‘pay-as-what-you-want’ Fridays / 7-10PM . . are going to be hot, until people tire of the classics, but maybe that will give them just enough breathing space . . to up their cutting edge – game.

my first request ?
get KEVIN MORBY !! – back in town – for a concert !!
and let . . CINDERS put up a group show – for the back-drop.

Red Rover, red rover . . !!

yeah, Whitney white bread, oops I mean white glove admins . . you sure can hire ME as a creative consultant for a super exciting cutting edge program – any day.
or just a one-off, guest curator gig, lol.
my contact is at the top of this page – at the left.
as if . . . pigs can fly – over the moon.

what do they say ?
hope, and courage – are the 2 most important human traits.

~MAMIKO OTSUBO . . CLEOPATRA’S

SKY LOBBY (CE!): MAMIKO OTSUBO – OPENS SUN APRIL 26, 2015 / 7-9 PM
the show runs APRIL 26 – MAY 31, 2015
CLEOPATRA’S – 110 MESEROLE AVE, BROOKLYN
GALLERY HRS: SUN 12-6PM/MON 2-8PM

IMAGE: MAMIKO OTSUBO, ‘Sky Lobby (CE!)’

from the CLEOPATRA’S PRESS RELEASE:

SKY LOBBY (CE!)
TEXT – by Robert Rhee:

note: (CE!) in the show’s title speaks to this relationship of disparate physical sites linked by a shared virtual standards. (CE!) or Copy Exactly! is a methodology developed and implemented by INTEL which “focuses on matching the manufacturing site to the development site. Matching occurs at all levels for physical inputs and statistically-matched responses (outputs).”
So, no matter if you are at D1X in Hillsboro, Oregon, or Fab 28 in Kiryat Gat, Israel, or fab 68 in Dalian, Liaoning, China .. if you are on the production floor everything from the orientation, to the height, size, material, ect of everything around you will be exactly the same.

Read more: about it . . , and . . .

PS: the info graphics and corporate brochure/design, of the 2 Intel links, above – are super interesting. if not just for the industrial non-threatening ‘jargon’ (!!). I find them really interesting on some strange non-organic level, in both design, tech, digital evolution & of course, future-speak-wise – !!
I’m thinking back to that DUSTIN YELLIN & BAZZAR TEENS & their ‘TREE-TECH’ Brochure, and their over-all ‘industrial’ gone to seed & chaos . . installation at SPRING BREAK 2015.
just try to replicate – that workplace – !!!!
flux, flux. flux. watch out free thought, innovation, and . .
thinking outside the box.
hence burgers on steeple, I guess !!

well better than a 2 ton, or was that 3 ton ? JEFF KOONS’ proposal, for real !! – to hang a life-size steel ‘Railroad Engine’ from a hi-rise industrial crane over the High Line / Hudson River. I guess, just like all it takes is a one day / one night pop-up to crash the art scene here, a digital re-creation, exact copy (!!) works just as well, as the real thing, if not better. statement-wise. light touch is the way to go, if you want to subvert the NYC skyline, or even the urban terrain.
I would even say, in that case:
it’s SEAN VEGEZZI vs JEFF KOONS for figuring that out !!
SEAN VEGEZZI wins !!
red rover red rover – time for the young ‘uns to take over.

‘TIDAL POOL’ – CURATED BY ALEX EBSTEIN
OPENING FRI APRIL 24, 2015 / 7-10 PM
the show runs APRIL 24 – MAY 30, 2015
GREENPOINT TERMINAL GALLERY – 67 WEST ST #320 – GREENPOINT, BROOKLYN, NY

ANDREW GUENTHER, ‘Untitled’, 2013

“The tide recedes from the shore and leaves behind temporary ecosystems, restructured and contained. Adaptable creatures once at the depths of the sea floor, are caught in the craggy landscape and reorganize themselves into a new set of rules, dramatic climate shifts and feeding habits. Vulnerable to gulls and other land predators in their shallow transparency, tide pools are fascinating to scientists and casual beach enthusiasts alike for this same quality. It’s in these still waters that mollusks, anemones, and smaller crustaceans are easiest to observe for their idiosyncrasies and industriousness.”

the show’s curator, ALEX EBSTEIN . . . is an artist, curator and writer based in Baltimore, MD. among other things, she is the co-founder and director of Nudashank, an artist-run gallery in Baltimore that presented programming from 2009-2013.

ANDREW GUENTHER: (b. 1976) is an American artist based in Brooklyn, NYC since 2000. he earned his MFA at Rutgers in 2000.

JORDAN CASEY: (b. 1985) grew up in the Chicago area and earned a BFA from the Maryland Institute Colllege of art in 2008. she has been living and working Brooklyn since 2013.

NICHOLAS MOENICH: (b. 1985) is also currently Brooklyn-based. He received a BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art (2008), and an MFA form Hunter college in 2011. among other things he also attended the Vermont Studio Center residency program.

TRACY THOMASON (b. 1984) hails from Gaithersburg, Maryland. She currently lives and works in Brooklyn. She received her MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan, and before that, a BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore.

~SEAN VEGEZZI . . FLASHBACK TO 2010

ARCHIVAL PHOTO: SEAN VEGEZZI with CLARA . . NYC, MARCH 18, 2010
PHOTO & COPYRIGHT: NANCY SMITH

while I was looking through my archives, for some fab iO TILLET WRIGHT PHOTOS, I found this one of artist/photog/uidie curator – SEAN VEGEZZI, at that very same RYAN McGINLEY opening . . Ryan McGinley, ‘EVERYBODY KNOWS THIS IS NOWHERE’, MAR 18-APRIL 17, 2010. TEAM GALLERY, 83 Grand St, Soho, NYC.

how old is he, back then – 5 years ago . . 18 ? maybe.

~iO . . hits the Big time !!

PHOTO: NANCY SMITH

yes, that . . . is – !!

NYC’S very own . . . iO – !!

splashed across the tabloids, this week !!
making headlines for romancing AMBER HEARD, even though the beautiful but apparently smart crazy wild actress is . . . married to JOHNNY, JOHNNY D-E-P-P – !!

iO TILLIT-WRIGHT vs JOHNNY DEPP ?
I’m thinkin’ . . iO – wins !!

it takes a lot to steal the wind – off a pirate ship.

see: Photog friend exposes rift between Amber Heard & Johnny DEPP – PAGE SIX, NEW YORK POST

the ‘photog friend’ – they are all referring to is . . . IO.
Io ?
or, as she likes to spell it: iO !!
the story is making tabloid headlines all over the world, including the international Daily Mail, People mag, etc etc.
note: seems iO has gone to the platinum side !!, and her ‘he’ side is on focus, so much so, that the Daily Mail article actually refers to her, as “he” – !!
so, congrats – IO !!

she’s also apparently trying to look way older than her actual years . . . so trendy !!
I’m with ya on that !! – in truth she’s about 29.
damn, if life in the fast lane – sure don’t take it’s toll !!

ps: did you catch the whole Page Six post – at some point she was even living in Johnny’s guesthouse, but “Johnny doesn’t like Io”, and at so,at some point she had to leave – !!

so, as you can see, iO can switch from male to femme, in the bat of an eyelash. she’s very charismatic, and loves to play the game. unlike most of the mundane already !! ‘transgender’ stories being dumped on us left and right these days, artist that she is, iO likes to ricochet off both sides of the game – you go – girl.
she seems to really get off on the charade, the insta-flicker of sexual ‘persona’ and confusion.

one thing is for certain, she’s seems to be very camera-shy about her (own) body. you will never see any naked photos of her ?!!
even that McGinley shot – is a head portrait.

so, how old is iO – because she looks 40, in those recent tabloid pix.
in reality – she’s somewhere in the range of 29.

I know this, because iO . . . went to elementary school with my kids, Kate and Theo, PS 3 – on Hudson St. near Christopher in the West Village.
(“all roads lead to . . Nancy” / thank you very much for that enduring and apparently, correct quote – CHARLIE FINCH.)

screengrab: WATCH IO – give TED TALK – HUFFINGTON POST

PS 3 – and then, the WORLD – !!!!!!!

yep, this is what iO looked like – in elementary school. she was a boy and there was no ifs, ands, or buts about it. she drove everybody crazy. transgender, even bi-sexual wasn’t even in the dictionary back then. but role-playing was, and her parents were touring actors, so . . . this being PS 3, this being hardcore downtown public school NYC – let the kid role-play !!
and as she says it . . so much better, it’s none of the above . . . it’s: living outside the BOX !!
tell me about it. except for me – it’s an issue of radar, not gender.
insider vs outsider. always on the outside, looking in. never fitting in.
it’s borderline – high functioning autistic. no social skills, all heat-seeking radar.

and that was that.
but, even back then, as a 6 yr old kid she dove into her life like a full-blown tornado slash movie role – if you check out that Huffington Post article on her TED TALK, link below – it states that “for 8 years she convinced everybody she was a boy”, starting from age 6, so yeah, that’s her timeline at PS 3.

that was her heat-target mission when she went to school – to play with the boys. she ignored the girls and they ignored her. the big sticking point was the bathroom. it was a big controversy esp among those dumb-ass and pretty much clueless PTA moms over there, because iO used the boy’s bathroom. there was a whole group that thought iO was a girl, right ???
and shouldn’t use the boy’s bathroom . . .
and then, there was a whole other group who thought that iO was a BOY ?!!
and it was – ok.
so, why did they think iO was a boy ?
“because she uses the boy’s bathroom” – was the go-to answer. go figure, and seriously, that’s how it played out, the entire K thru grade 5.

she was a pretty intimidating kid for any unaware adult to confront, she knew what she wanted. she reveled in her theatrical role, and took much delight in confusing as many people as she could. though I’m not sure the boys were that convinced, but maybe they were. who knows. She just zoomed around with seemingly a boundless and joyfully engaged inner life, trouble was her middle initial. hellbent from the age of 6 on a ‘theatrical’ mission: gender confusion. all the while, playing it out with as huge of a mischievous grin as you could imagine, flitting about her impish red-haired pixie face. she was I’m thinking . . an Irish imp, super precocious. not to be defined by convention.
just born that way. get used to – it.

but am I surprised she’s Johnny Depp’s love rival ?
omg – so fab / fab tab-loid !! yes !!

see: IO – FOR 8 YEARS SHE CONVINCED THE WORLD, SHE WAS A BOY . . . with TED TALK VIDEO LINK – HUFFINGTON POST

see: iO Tillett Wright – Overspray Magazine . . . Io founded Overspray in 2002, and ‘shuttered’ it in 2008. the “world’s first street art publication” – ?!!
I don’t think so. drama, drama, drama follows this kid around like a second skin.

see: iO Tillet Wright . . about
damn, she EVEN has a – press agent – !!
guess that comes from having been a . . kid actor ?

~JERRY SALTZ vs ROBERT STORR – ROUND TWO !! SIMON CERIGO CRASHES THE TALK PARTY – !!

the local YALIES – JOIN THE FRAY – and, stick by their guy – !!

“in terms of SALTZ vs STORR . . . JERRY SALTZ is a lounge act.
Have a show with some titties in it and he will write a review.
Have a nice ass and he will write a good review.”

“Also ‘Rob’ has only been there since 2010/11 . . . if the art world is so fast that we should have the next hottest artist in 5 years . . then NO thank you !!!!!!”

artlovers: why the hell, not ? have the art world be so fast.

and YES, the art world can be that fast !!
in fact, that’s when it is at its best. other-wise it can be pretty banal for all that anybody else claims,
and not only DO YOU KNOW YOU IT, you being all the new wave of up and comers, not just the Yalies, who are a strong contingent this year in particular, but YOU WANT TO BE – . . THAT HOT artist, rising to the top, really really fast, really really badly !!

like within 1 year of getting that hard-won Greenpoint apt, or that postage stamp-sized Bushwick studio. if not just so that you can pay rent, but so that you can actually eat, too.

and, further . . tell me it isn’t so.
for any newbie who hasn’t scored a gallery, no matter how shaky, within 6 months of getting here, depression lurks around every corner, every new Facebook friend’s event, is a crisis.
it’s a veritable musical chairs, egged on by social media !!

bring on the Greenpoint – Yalie shipping containers !! now, that’s a well-done solution, D.I.Y !!
olordy, I can just imagine it, the competing newbie pop-up shipping container – wars !!

anyway, I heard on the grapevine, that “ROB STORR is an incredible educator who is not doing the Columbia (!!!!) thing – which is to be hip and fashionable.”

artlovers: Rirkrit Tiravanija . . . are you gonna take that – lying down ?

the composite newbie: “I am biased, but I went to YALE because I don’t care about the SALTZ’S in the world. I don’t care about the VITO SCHNABEL’S. I make work. I make ideas, and I really believe that most of my classmates in the graduate program feel the same.
also, YALE gives incredible FINANCIAL AID and scholarship – much more than most other schools. I would never have been able to study there if ROB had not restructured the program from the BOCHNER/HALLEY days – they used to have LOBSTER DINNERS.”

STOP – RIGHT THERE. NYC CRITICS – LOVE THEIR LOBSTER.

artlovers: well friggin no wonder BOCHNER/HALLEY got so many students into galleries here, everybody knows that’s the way into the critics’ inner circle here – give ’em a lobster dinner. if SIMON, SIMON CERIGO, RIP was still around, he’d be chirping in right now, like a little song bird !!

ghost of SIMON CERIGO: private, LOBSTER dinners, bring ’em on !!
key to many a success.
back in the day, when MIAMI BASEL was just baby stepping it, they threw huge LOBSTER-LOADED BUFFETS here in NYC – to get the NYC collectors on board. I often saw that power duo, ROBERTA & JERRY . . at the private, night-before-opening lobster-laden previews at DAVID ZWIRNER.

artlovers: SIMON . . . if truth be told, adored and worshiped at the altar of ROBERTA !! Roberta and he always greeted each year, esp as the years grew into decades, with many a casual pleasantry, and much info exchange, on Simon’s part. Robert a was more tight-lipped, being the paid professional.
Simon could always tell when I had written something really outrageous, or in frank opposition to her point of view . . . just by her expression !!
then he’d rush home, and exclaim, what the f did you write – ?!!

in fact, whenever she stopped to converse with him, no matter how briefly, he would rush home to report it like a grade A report card. then he would call CHARLIE FINCH to make the requisite nightly report – his encounter with Roberta headlining the night’s events.

back to Zwirner.
SIMON was probably the only starving artist – they let in to the lobster previews. I mean the dude did get around, he spread the buzz, and he liked – that Zwirner European agenda.

for sure Simon jump-started the tidal wave craze for . . . THOMAS RUFF.
starting with the first online found porn blurry images of 2001, 2002, and 2003.
come to think of it, Simon was a bit of a ‘lounge’ act, himself !!

but he also totally loved THOMAS RUFF’S blurry landscape photos and, the crazy abstract ‘Substrat Series’ . . .

as for Roberta ?
Simon would have been very hurt that she and Jerry didn’t show for his memorial, or even make one dedicated line – addressed to his untimely passing, back in Jan 2013 – in either of their press platforms.
although both the OBSERVER and artinfo came up with some well-written, much appreciated, and not forgetting the character at hand . . entertaining obits !!

archival photo of SIMON CERIGO, when he was just about your age, 28 or so.
when he was a newbie – hoping to make his mark on the scene, the photo was taken just before he was about to split Montreal for NEW YORK, and never look back.

the archival – exhibit card for:
CHRISTOPHER WILLIAMS. the self-titled show ran November 21, 2001 through December 21, 2002.
(wow, right after: 9-11 !!)
Reception: November 20, 2002, 6 to 8 PM
DAVID ZWIRNER, 525 West 19th Street, New York, NY 10011
collection: THEO CERIGO / SIMON CERIGO ARCHIVES

the card is on real solid hard stock, a full 8 x 8 in. – that’s the way they made ’em, back in the day.

SIMON . . . used to collect all the cards from the shows he saw, which is pretty much every show that ever happened in NYC. uptown and downtown. there was no real Brooklyn – yet.
he didn’t do early Cinders . . too much fun !! all the better for me !!
we tried to divvy up the scene between us, so we pretty much – had it all covered.
he did mainstream, Soho, Chelsea and uptown, including the auctions. the last big uptown opening he made, was the inaugural show of . . Venus Over Manhattan.
I did underground, and the BREAKING FAST / HARD CORE. street art.
I generally hate uptown, I like . . just being born. fast, and no money !!

Simon liked . . money guys.
even though they used him, and spit him out. ok, so what, he got into a lot of huge parties.
and every now some ‘user’ collector, of the uptown Japanese mafia elk – would throw him $1,000 bucks – for a DAN ASHER.

better boot up, newbies. this is a tough town.
samurai/warrior/flaneur.
that’s what it takes.
