‘MIDAS’ – KENNY KOMER and BORIS RASIN

BROKEN, ABANDONED, and mundane objects along 14th Street … are painted a metallic gold color.
By painting these stationary items gold, the artists bring pedestrians’ attention to the forgotten relics
that otherwise disappear into the urban periphery.

TIME: ongoing throughout OCTOBER 2008

LOCATION: 22, 247, & 526 EAST 14th STREET – & – SE CORNER WEST 14th STREET at 10TH AVENUE

‘MIDAS’ – KENNY KOMER and BORIS RASIN – BROKEN, ABANDONED, AND MUNDANE OBJECTS ALONG
14th STREET – ARE PAINTED A METALLIC GOLD.
and yes, – their premise is true, (if you are a sharp witted pedestrian) – “BY PAINTING THESE STATIONARY ITEMS GOLD, THE ARTISTS BRING PEDESTRIANS’ ATTENTION TO THE
FORGOTTEN RELICS THAT OTHERWISE DISAPPEAR INTO THE URBAN PERIPHERY.”
PHOTOS: NANCY SMITH, 14th St. at 9th Ave., NYC. OCT 19, 2008

P.S.– in response to a query for more info regarding this street ‘landmark’ & the painting of it !! – we just got an interesting note back – from the artists:

“To be honest we are not 100% sure what that is. We believe it to be some sort of old vent, probably for the subway system. There are a bunch of them throughout the city and they usually appear above a subway line. So that is our guess.
“We approached the DOT, FDNY and DEP to get permits to do a bunch of projects along 14th Street including parking meters, old fire call boxes, street poles, etc. While they all thought the project was interesting, none of them wanted to grant us official permission. Those vents you saw actually weren’t owned by DEP. Maybe they are owned by the MTA but we didn’t want to get another “NO” – so we just went ahead and painted them. We did it in broad daylight with rollers and were never stopped by a single cop, just curious pedestrians.
“We have about a dozen pieces along 14th Street. One favorite is a huge stretch of an old piece of steel spanning around the corner of 14th Street & 10th Avenue.” – KENNY KOMER & BORIS RASIN

see more pix of their project – on the artists’ website, pretty i-n-t-e-r-e-s-t-i-n-g !!

and, definite – check out their: website !!

P.P.S.

KENNY KOMER & BORIS RASIN, are local talent – NYC kids – who seem to pretty much collaborate as a creative team – since way back in the day – when they became friends in their COOPER UNION undergrad college days. Though, interestingly enough they both went to the same Junior High School – MARK TWAIN JHS in CONEY ISLAND – and, they both had attended LAGUARDIA HS, previously.
They made waves in the underground (pun intended !!) – way back in 2005 – when they created a series of very detailed site specific underground scenarios in the concrete crawlspace – beneath the WEST 26th ST. sidewalk – in Chelsea – for the now defunct CAPSULE GALLERY – while they were still undergrads at COOPER UNION. Kenny was in his Junior year, and Boris was a Senior. What was so unique, among many things actually – about this project – was that the installation was viewable though a ‘window’ in the basement location of the gallery, though the actual crawlspace itself – was only accessible through a kind of narrow ‘manhole’ entry in the sidewalk itself.

~OLGA CHERNYSHEVA/last week !!

OLGA CHERNYSHEVA – last week !!
SEPT 9 – OCT 10, 2008
FOXY PRODUCTION – 617 WEST 27th ST. – CHELSEA – NYC

last week to catch this rather enigmatic show – a documentary take – that has the feel of an artwork. It’s also interesting because it’s the rare Moscow-based artist – female – at that, that scores face time on 27th ST. – land of the (most) cutting edge !!

olga # 1
OLGA CHERNYSHEVA, ‘ALLEY OF COSMONAUTS’, 2008, Silver-gelatin fiber prints.
Edition of 5 + 2AP. The silver gelatin process brings a soulful dimension to this scene – already strange in its natural state of deterioration – Moscow’s “famous avenue of statues dedicated to the heroes of Soviet space travel.” It’s really, at its most basic – photography ‘of the street’, in that it is just plain and simple, but deeply felt – photographic capture – of what is ironically just there – a very charged scene – in the right hands – for the taking !!

olga # 2
the protectively covered cosmonaut statues flicker between aspects of dignified Buddhas, mysterious ancient totems, zombies, mummies, or even, upright & about to walk – living dead – body bags about to come to life – just in time for Halloween.

olga # 3

Olga # 4

Olga # 5

Olga # 6

olga # 8
on the opposite wall – a completely different series. ‘FROM THE DEPUTY’, 2008, Duraclear prints.
Edition of 5 + 2AP.
at first take – these seem to be actual black ‘sharpie’ & spray paint drawings on clear mylar. street art – inspired spontaneous gestures with bits of realist street underpinnings. but, no !! these are also photographs – large, beautifully ‘transparent’ in the most way-out definition – of actual, street murals made by local artists – in Russian bus shelters !! street-art photographs with a completely different feel.
. . . “FROM THE DEPUTY is a series of black and white transparencies of a municipal public art project in various stages of decay and erasure. Forlorn and vandalized murals have been overlaid with a stenciled statement from the city chief, announcing his benevolence in commissioning the project. Presenting tensions between social policy and artistic practice, the series memorializes the work of the original
artist while questioning whether autonomy is possible.” – press release.

olga # 14
but let’s give the last word, to the artist at hand. on a 3rd wall – there is a loop screening of a brief street video that feels so unlike our own – as to cause a sensation of foreign time travel !!
OLGA CHERNSYHEVA’S video: ‘Untitled’ portrays a low-profile (friend of hers) pedestrian trying to peddle (?) a very young child’s version of etch-a-sketch doodles – that vanish into spatial infinity.

LECTURE – COLONIAL REVIVAL QUILTS – NOON – SAT – OCT 4, 2008
The American Folk Art Museum – BRANCH LOCATION at 2 LINCOLN SQUARE
Columbus Avenue at 66th Street
FREE

as part of a QUILT WEEKEND (OCT 3-4, 2008)

SPEAKER: SHARON L. EISENSTAT, co-author, ‘Glorious American Quilts’ (1996)

“While popular interest in America’s past was sparked by the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial exposition and promoted by the spread of the arts and crafts movement in the late 19th century, it was the colonial revival of the early 20th century that truly inspired women to search their attics and basements for antique quilts and, failing that, to sew their own interpretations of the old-time bedcovers using natural, unadorned materials in simple designs. Museum exhibitions, magazine articles, and even advertisements for household products encouraged Americans to decorate in what was becoming the unofficial national style, and cotton patchwork quilt were viewed as the appropriate accessories for the new decorating mode that drew its inspiration from a romanticized American past.” – press release

ARCHIVAL PHOTO/DAN ASHER OPENS ‘BIRD Of PREY’, GBE@Passerby, OCT 14, 2005
PHOTO: NANCY SMITH

dan wrestler
PHOTO: DAN ASHER, in ‘BIRD OF PREY’.

when DAN ASHER exhibited his first shot at gaining some attention in a long time, in the FALL of 2005 at Passerby – nobody noticed.

artlovers wrote at the time: “Dan Asher’s show ‘BIRD OF PREY’ was one of the best shows of FALL 2005, which, for no good reason, slipped by under the mainstream radar. ‘BIRD OF PREY’ was a one man compilation of photographs that ranged from stupendous iceberg and aurora borealis landscapes to extreme and violent illegal ‘backyard’ wrestling events that flourish in the mid-west – with a few Middle America portraits thrown in for good measure.”
see: the original post
see: PIX FROM THE 2005 OPENING & PHOTOS OF THE WORK !!

but, now he has work up at WHITE COLUMNS – and somebody, very mainstream – took note !!

in a review of their current offerings – no less a critic than ROBERTA SMITH, wrote in today’s NEW YORK TIMES ART In REVIEW SECTION (FRIDAY, OCT 3, 2008) . . .
” . . . but the general reticence (of the main exhibit a curatorial presentation by B. WURTZ) is disrupted by two other shows: the raucous quilt paintings of VIOLETTE ALBY and a 25-year survey of the alternately Minimalist and Expressionist paintings and drawings of the talented DAN ASHER.
But Mr. Asher brings everything to a gentle fade-out with a recent irresistibly musical video titled ‘Moonscape’, in which a succession of blurry photographs of a moonlit ocean finds its ideal accompaniment in LIZ DURRETT singing ‘The Sea a Dream’. It is amazing what can be accomplished with a cellphone in motion”.
– ROBERTA SMITH

P.S. DAN was so nice to write us a little note correcting Roberta’s review: he didn’t use a cellphone. let alone one in motion !! – (she must have ROB PRUITT’S show – ‘iPhotos’ – now up at GBE – stuck on the brain !!).
Dan says: …”bye the way, the video wasn’t shot with a cellphone camera, it was shot at the Jersey Shore last summer on TOM JARMUSCH’S not-so-vintage canon camcorder with a slow shutter speed” and, goes on in his indomitable way… “when next I see the esteemed R. SMITH, I’ll tell her, half in jest, that my cellphone actually doesn’t have camera/nor a video component which in the eyes of the judiciously meticulous reviewer of the ‘paper of record’ would make its (the video’s) existence – all the more indigenously amazing (double grin !!).”
