. . . actually, he didn't keep the blank white 'squares', per se, they sort of evolved into the primary shaped boxy font of the book cover's title letter/characters .. 'wipe that clock off your face' and .. the 'color strips' around the squares - became the actual hue or color chart range of the title letters.
