stitched art by CHIE FUKI. BILL BRADY of atm put up a 'sweet' - but, PRETTY INTENSE - summer group show of some of the women artists his gallery showcases. atm, July 10, 2008 it's up until AUGUST 1. |
detail, CHIE FUKIE. atm, July 10, 2008
the interior shapes definitely do NOT assume innocent/pretty poses. they get pretty aggressive & raw. |
detail, CHIE FUKIE, atm, July 10, 2008 this is the last week to check out this show. |
|
a small, bright & strange painting by SAEKO TAKAGI. atm, July 10, 2008 |

a small, but intense example of the absolutely cutting edge color field work of YAYOI DEKI. atm, July 10, 2008 |
HUMA BHABHA - ink on photograph, 20 x 13 ins. Huma's brooding intense, and 'pretty ugly' sculptures are making a global name for themselves. Her big primal open mesh 'head' is currently on exhibit in the New Museum. atm, July 10, 2008 |
 closer-up. HUMA BHABHA. atm, July 10, 2008 |
|
always - striking. brooding and, original - 'romance' on the sharpest edge. MIN KIM. atm, July 10, 2008 |

pretty raw. photo realist painting by YOKO KAWAMOTO. atm, July 10, 2008 |
we catch BILL BRADY checking his messages, outside his gallery on 27th Street in Chelsea. atm, July 17, 2008 |
BILL BRADY. feeling pretty good ... about the way things are going for him. atm, July 17, 2008
you can see more of these artists' works on: the gallery website.
atm is pretty much at the forefront of things - having a 'stable' of overwhelmingly female, & pretty tough to beat, artists. |

GAVIN BROWN'S enterprise - shaking down to be the next really big kingpin - Larry Gagosian - look out !! GBE, July 10, 2008 |
up on the roof, GAVIN BROWN'S enterprise, July 10, 2008
GBE is located downtown, in the West Village. |
the poster/invite for 'PRETTY UGLY', a big group survey show - curated by ALISON GINGERAS - with a kind of ridiculous theme. the show fell as flat as the poster. what happened. it took over the whole block - that is GAVIN BROWN's enterprise and MACCARONE. the show opened July 10 and is running through AUGUST 29, 2008 - so - you can go make up your own !! mind about it. |
|
p-r-e-t-t-y cute !! little THEA, daughter of CAROL BOVE and GORDON TERRY, she looks so much like her mom. 'PRETTY UGLY', MACCARONE, July 10, 2008 |
CAROL BOVE, looking down at her precious little one. 'PRETTY UGLY', MACCARONE, July 10, 2008 |
CAROL BOVE had the only !! really new piece worth its p.r. in the MACCARONE portion of the show. too bad - it was encased in a plexiglas box frame. 'PRETTY UGLY', July 10, 2008 |
|
detail, CAROL BOVE. hundreds of gorgeous reflective peacock feathers - yearning to be set free. if you saw her recent solo show at MACCARONE - you got to see the peacock feathers raw - and free to reflect and (slightly) waver and rustle in the atmosphere. a floor/sculpture piece - it wasn't encased. 'PRETTY UGLY', MACCARONE, July 10, 2008 |
ANN CRAVEN. a curious choice. if this is pretty ugly - no wonder the show fell flat - it got stretched too far. but it was one of the more striking pieces. the show needed more large and cutting edge pieces like this one. just like the poster needed to be more high definition & glossy. 'PRETTY UGLY', MACCARONE, July 10, 2008 |
JORG IMMENDORFF - one of the only of the many 'historical' - i.e. way last generation - pieces - to scream out - relevant !! - still alive & kicking. and 'PRETTY UGLY' !! MACCARONE, July 10, 2008. it's this piece, and few others, mostly at GBE - that actually make the show a definite in terms of worth seeing. esp for young artists on the scene - otherwise they are going to be VERY disappointed by the wishy washy - history lesson. there's a whole new generation of 'grotesque' painter/comic/illustration artists here - whose work should have been on the wall. and whose omission - makes this part of the show - a real write-off for New York City locals. |
|
if MS. GINERAS is trying to impress us with her cutting edge grip on New York City - she again, falls very flat, with this piece by AGATHE SNOW. more a 'trendie' participant in the scene - rather than a real dynamic, this piece is NOT even so bad - as to be pretty ugly - its just pathetic. MS. SNOW should stick to cooking for B list parties. what's pretty ugly is that MS. GINGERAS, who's supposed to be one of the best in her field - falls for such hollow hype. 'PRETTY UGLY', MACCARONE, July 10, 2008 |
detail, AGATHE SNOW. give us DAN COLEN or NATE LOWMAN, any day. even JOCELYN SHIPLEY !! not to mention: just about anybody - that hangs with BOBO !! 'PRETTY UGLY', MACCARONE, July 19, 2008. |
the worst. pretty devoid of anything. and that makes the curator look pretty ugly. AGATHE SNOW. 'PRETTY UGLY', MACCARONE, July 10, 2008 |
at the show - CHUCK CLOSE. 'PRETTY UGLY', MACCARONE, July 10, 2008 |
|
DAVID ZWIRNER and the guest curator of the show - ALISON GINGERAS. she's got a great new haircut and has presented some knock-out pieces - but, by local standards - the show comes up short. it definitely lacks some real firepower/but, yo - keep it up. if there - weren't - a cutting edge New York City - we'd all just be living in a vacuum. so JUST come back more often & get the real hook-up. 'PRETTY UGLY', MACCARONE, July 10, 2008 .. and, yep the piece on the back wall - says: 'AVERAGE'. |
MICHELE MACCARONE guides DAVID ZWIRNER through the show. don't think she expected the critical backlash. even the NEW YORK TIMES (Holland Cotter) concluded the show - was a 'waste of time' & the 'PRETTY UGLY' theme - ultimately .. "a snore". 'PRETTY UGLY', MACCARONE, July 10, 2008 |
moving over to the GBE portion of the show, we happen upon, from left, DONALD SHERIDAN, and CHARLIE FINCH, in a dazed-like stupor. dazed by too much 'PRETTY UGLY' going nowhere ? 'PRETTY UGLY', GAVIN BROWN'S enterprise + MACCARONE, July 10, 2008 |
|
 o.k. !! finally, a real live wire !! SCOTT REEDER. 'PRETTY UGLY', GAVIN BROWN'S enterprise. July 10, 2008 |
not only does SCOTT REEDER have a piece in the show - score - one big CONNECT !! - finally - for MS. GINGERAS - but, its hanging upstairs - so we get to finally break the 'glass ceiling' and see, what it's like - up-the-stairs !! at Gavin Brown's !! 'PRETTY UGLY', GAVIN BROWN'S enterprise, July 10, 2008 |
SCOTT REEDER'S paintings just get better and better, and they are truly weird, and moody and just damn PRETTY UGLY in their matteness and dark humor. how great to be able to see this one. thanks A-L-I-S-O-N !! makes the whole show worth while - and, PLUS - you get to ask to go upstairs - to the inner sanctums - to see it. YO!!!
'PRETTY UGLY', GAVIN BROWN'S enterprise, July 10, 2008
|
|
LOVE IT !! SCOTT REEDER - in best form. dry, wry - color study & completely off-the-wall. 'PRETTY UGLY', GAVIN BROWN'S enterprise. July 10, 2008. |
also, upstairs a portrait of MORRISSEY by ROB PRUITT and MATTHEW HIGGS, though can't help but think of early shows by JOCELYN SHIPLEY, at CANADA - whenever a pair of beat-up jeans - comes up on the radar. 'PRETTY UGLY', GAVIN BROWN'S enterprise, July 10, 2008 |
just then, the curator, ALISON GINGERAS, in green, - with friend, SARAH HOOVER, a GAGOSIAN GALLERY ASSOCIATE, come up for a refreshment. 'PRETTY UGLY', GAVIN BROWN'S enterprise, July 10, 2008 |
|
from left, the show's curator, ALISON GINGERAS, is toasted by pal, SARAH HOOVER, of GAGOSIAN GALLERY, NYC. 'PRETTY UGLY', GAVIN BROWN'S enterprise, July 10, 2008 |
looking out on the roof - the big open window - looks like a photograph - in a frame - on the wall. 'PRETTY UGLY', GAVIN BROWN'S enterprise, July 10, 2008 |
up - the forbidden stairs. 'PRETTY UGLY' . GAVIN BROWN'S enterprise, July 10, 2008 |
|
there it is, the other BIG!! reason for dropping by this show - a new !! huge 'sequin-like' wall piece by ROB PRUITT - !! - 'Prince William Sound 1989', 2008 !! it's like stumbling on a $100 dollar bill in the street. plastic reflecto lights and enamel on board, 64 x 160 in. 'PRETTY UGLY', GAVIN BROWN'S enterprise, July 10, 2008 |
. . . and unlike CAROL BOVE'S peacock piece - it is completely open and exposed on the wall. you can even see the ripples of the reflecto lights/sequin-like units - in the photo. !! an endless mirage of shimmer and shake. an autistic's dream - come true. just simply a wonder to behold - guess that's
saying it ... 'PRETTY UGLY' enuf !!. ROB PRUITT, 'Prince William Sound, 1989', 'PRETTY UGLY', GAVIN BROWN'S enterprise, July 10, 2008 - yo, Alison, now you are talking. |
detail, ROB PRUITT, 'Prince William Sound 1989', 2008. 'PRETTY UGLY', GAVIN BROWN'S enterprise, July 10, 2008 |
|
ROB PRUITT - taking his own pix - at the show. 'PRETTY UGLY', GAVIN BROWN'S enterprise, July 10, 2008 |
HAIM STEINBACH. he has a somewhat interesting, although monumentally under-scaled piece in the show. 'PRETTY UGLY', GAVIN BROWN'S enterprise, July 10, 2008 |
top: painting by JOHN CURRIN, 'Equality in the Work Place', 2002, oil on canvas. below: HAIM STEINBACH, 'Sugar Bowl', 30 x 31 x 12 in. in 'PRETTY UGLY', GAVIN BROWN'S enterprise, July 10, 2008 |

JOHN CURRIN, 'Equality in the Work Place', 2002, oil on canvas, 14 x 12 in., a pretty nifty - pretty ugly piece !! 'PRETTY UGLY', GAVIN BROWN'S enterprise, July 10, 2008 |
BRUCE LaBRUCE, 'Untitled (Pig's Blood Blowjob)', 2002, ED 3/5 + AP, 13.25 x 20 in. courtesy PERES PROJECTS, Berlin/Los Angeles. actually pretty damn bloody ugly !! JEFF KOONS giving head to a pig masked counterpart.. 'PRETTY UGLY', GAVIN BROWN'S enterprise, July 10, 2008
overall - Gavin's portion had the best pieces and the skankiest !! maybe MS. GINGERAS should have just scaled back the show - and tossed all the dead weight. |
|
also pretty skanky !! PIOTR UKLANSKI, 'Untitled (Kinski/Cicciolina)', 2008. c-prints, steel frame, wood.
'PRETTY UGLY', GAVIN BROWN'S enterprise, July 20, 2008 |

. . a man with a sense of humor !! when we asked his name - he spelt it out: R-O-B P-R-U-I-T-T !! will the real ROB PRUITT, please stand up, please stand up. ANGUS COOK .. being !!! 'PRETTY UGLY', wicked/inspired. GAVIN BROWN'S enterprise, July 10, 2008 |
