MARIE LORENZ with her handmade wooden kayak. at the opening of 'LOCAL TRANSIT' curated by Brian Butler and Christian Rattemeyer - an exhibit created in partnership with Artspace (Auckland, New Zealand) and Artists Space (New York), Artists Space, May 16, 2006 |
MARIE LORENZ, her piece is formally titled: 'I am Half Sick of Shadows' and comprises of 2 etched prints (made by a running a steamroller - yes !! a steamroller - over large paper on top of the shallowly incised wooden panels of the kayak (before it was assembled), 'Local Transit', Artists Space, May 16, 2006 |
|
MARIE LORENZ assembled the kayak from a commercial kit, but first she incised a shallow, but detailed etching, a depiction of the Manahattan waterfront, along the length of both sides, of the kayak. you can just make it out, beneath the heavy varnish that was later applied to the wood. 'Local Transit', Artists Space, May 16, 2006 |
impressions were made of the shallow relief carving, by running an actual steamroller over large paper placed on the wood panels, before the kayak was assembled, MARIE LORENZ, 'Local Transit', May 16, 2006 |

MARIE LORENZ with boyfriend, DUKE RILEY, 'Local Transit', Artists Space, May 16, 2006 DUKE RILEY recently made news himself, with his own form of Manhattan 'waterfront' obsession. He created a 'rogue' bar under the Belt Parkway, on deserted 'Plum Beach' - about a 1/2 mile walk from the 'meeting place' - the parking lot of a lobster restaurant in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn. The article, by RANDY KENNEDY, ran in The New York Times, June 26, 2006 |

RI WILLIAMSON, powder coated aluminum, modelling timber, translucent film and white light - unfortunately - the most striking effect, that of the 'white light' could not be captured in this setting - with a photo. the 'white light' - actually shone as a fixating 'blue' beam within the tiny windows, of this, and the window details of all the following pieces. 'Local Transit', Artists Space, May 16, 2006 |
